Green Demolition And Hazardous Waste Removal

Demolition of buildings happened all over the industrialized world for decades without any thought being given to how that might effect the planet. Now, we know that demolition can impact the health of the environment in many ways. And now that we know, we can work to reduce or even eliminate the ill environmental effects by focusing on green demolition. When we are careful about how we take down a building, the benefits are numerous.

When you embark on a green demolition, you end up with recoverable materials instead of waste. Recovered materials can be reused in all kinds of construction projects. Concrete can be ground and recycled into new concrete, for example, while lumber can be reused as is or recycled into wood chips or other wood-based products. Doing this saves resources by reducing our need to harvest, manufacture, or mine them, with the concomitant advantage of reducing the pollution and energy usage associated with that resource collection. Recycling these materials also reduces solid waste and helps reduce demand for limited landfill space. As 20 percent of solid waste produced is from construction and demolition, this is a substantial savings. Recovered resources also mean lower costs, either because owners will need to spend less on materials for their next project or because the resources can be sold to recoup the cost of the demolition.

Industrial sites may need some cleanup in addition to careful demolition. A hazardous waste removal company may be needed to remove toxins from the area. This includes removing lead and PCBs from the soil and other surrounding terrain. If left alone, they could lead to water contamination or become airborne pollutants.

If you demolish a building with dangerous substances in it, the process can release toxins into the air. Many older buildings will be full of these dangerous materials. Examples of these types of materials are asbestos and mold, both potentially fatal contaminants. A real green demolition would include cleaning up these materials as well as handling the demolition in a responsible way. If they don't, they are releasing dangerous toxins into the environment that can prove to have worse immediate consequences for the environment than long term pollutants like greenhouse gases. These problems will be ongoing as the materials that have settled to the ground will be stirred up again and again by wind, new construction, or even simply walking over the site.

Deconstruction and demolition experts companies that also handle hazardous waste cleanup are the right choices for sites that may contain dangerous materials. This way, you can recover resources and clean up the site at the same time. If the same company can handle both aspects of the job, you will save time and money over hiring two separate companies to do the jobs.
